Awareness is one of the most critical skills you can learn here at the A.C.W.A. Self Defense Academy! That might seem odd at first to some of you, but let me explain why. You see, you could be the fastest runner in the world, but if you’re not paying attention, and wonder into a busy street (not noticing the traffic) and get hit by a car, your speed won’t save you. Your lack of awareness of the situation did not allow you to use your speed to escape. The same goes for personal defense. You could train 8 hrs a day and be the baddest you know what in town, but if you’re not aware of a situation until it’s in your face, it might be to late to use any of your training. Awareness is critical to your survival and should be integrated (as we teach) into every training session. If your reality based self defense program isn’t teaching you that, perhaps think twice about the program!
We train our students to have an increased sense of the world around them. This allows them to spot potential issues and avoid them all together. If avoidance is not possible, at least they have as much notice as possible to make decisions if a situation is devolving rapidly.
How can you train your awareness?
There are some simple things you can do each day as your out and about our even driving that will make you more mindful of the world around you. If you live in a state where front license plates are required, start to look for them and more specifically, look for cars that don’t have them! What types of cars do you notice not having front plates? Are they new or old, are they sports cars or luxury? Paying attention to simple things like this when you’re driving or stopped in traffic, is a simple yet powerful reminder that we see many things but don’t always notice them until we pay attention.
So the real question is, what else are you missing out on that is also going on all around you?
