5 QUESTIONS YOU Need to ASK BEFORE JOINING A SELF DEFENSE PROGRAM
Not all martial arts programs are created equal, not even close. Many don’t actually teach self defense at all, they actually teach an art or a sport. Unfortunately, most schools don’t do a very good job of educating prospective students as to what they are actually getting.
So….that’s where we come in, and this is the exact purpose of this blog entry. Our goal is to help you know what to look for and look out for when your seeking a place to train. With that, I present you with 5 questions you should ask any school before joining their self defense program. Now you have a quick guide to know what your getting and spending your hard earned dollars on. Enjoy!
WILL THIS TRAINING:
1. GIVE ME REAL ABILITY FAST?
You need to be safe now, not 5-10 years from now. What you learn today you should be able to use that same night. Simple, instinct driven, intelligent defense training is essential.
2. WORK IN THE DARK?
Many assaults happen in less than ideal lighting conditions, so this is simply a “must have” in any school that teaches self defense. Learning how to deal with low light situations makes sure we have the tools we need should we find ourselves is a low visibility defense situation.
3. WORK AGAINST MULTPLE ATTACKERS?
The reality these days is that attacks are seldom 1-on-1. Every situation you train should take this variable in to account
4. INTEGRATE AWARENESS & VERBAL TACTICS?
A good program will train you in a multitude of conditions and situations. It should include tools that help you become more aware of the world around you as to avoid issues in the first place. Secondly, a good self defense program should integrate psychological and verbal tools that allow for de-escalation and provide you layers of defense.
5. WORK AGAINST A BIGGER PERSON?
Self defense is not a sport (there are no weight classes) so you need the skills to be effective against anyone, regularess of their size. The use of biomechanics, physics, psychology, and tactics all comes into play to give us an unfair advantage so weight is less of an issue.
